betashop: Make Mistakes (please, you're designed... →
betashop: The twitterverse is all abuzz today about Fab’s “Make Mistakes” poster and tee shirt. I wanted to take a minute to try to clear up a few things about this. Make Mistakes is a very common phrase. It’s one of our favorites here at Fab. I’ve been saying it for years. It’s one of our company…

Wind on a Leaf: Research Roundup: Responsibility... →
chartier: The New York Times recently renewed the conversation about working conditions in factories that make products for the tech industry. Even though less than a quarter of Foxconn’s one million employees make stuff for Apple, the New York Times focused on Apple for the two stories it wrote,…

Why I Hate Android
parislemon: Why do I hate Android? It’s definitely one of the questions I get asked most often these days. And most of those that don’t ask probably assume it’s because I’m an iPhone guy. People see negative take after negative take about the operating system and label me as “unreasonable” or “biased” or worse. I should probably explain. Believe it or not, I actually don’t hate Android. That...

Original iMac HD vs. OWC FW800 SSD
My first generation white 24” iMac has been running extremely slow lately. I’m not sure if the internal HD is on it’s last leg or if I’m just getting accustomed to the SSD speeds at work. In either case I’m trying to get another year or two out of my iMac before I upgrade and I figured the only way to do that was with an SSD. Unfortunately replacing the internal HD in...

Republicans Introduce Legislation Redefining Pi as... →
“It’s no panacea, but this legislation will point us in the right direction. Looking at hard data, we know our children are struggling with a heck of a lot of the math, including the geometry incorporating pi,” Roby said. “I guarantee you American scores will go up once pi is 3. It will be so much easier.”

Google, it's a bit late to pull this crap.
So Google just announced that they are dumping h.264 HTML5 <video> support in Chrome. Apparently they want you to believe this is the just another step towards that daisy-fresh “100% open” utopia of the future. Hell, they may actually be blind enough to believe it themselves. They have decided to put their weight behind their own WebM codec with the hopes of it becoming relevant, but in...

The Talk Show #14: Bubble Gum Apps →
marco: Craig Hockenberry and I invaded John Gruber and Dan Benjamin’s show yesterday and talked about the upcoming Mac App Store and Flash. I’m following Gruber’s lead and trying to run without Flash. It’s interesting so far — most notably, Safari is much faster and more stable without it. With Flash removed from the Internet Plugins folder, Firefox won’t have it, either, but Chrome will (it...

Still wondering about Blu-ray on Macs?
Take a real hard look at the MacBook Air, then multiply that result with Apple’s foray into streaming media. The optical drive has begun it’s short journey to popular external accessory-ville. First with the Macbook Air, then comes the MacBook, Mac Mini, and iMac. The pro machines will keep them a while longer, but their days are numbered too. I’ll be shocked if you’ll...

hulu+ is a joke
I just signed up for a one-month test of hulu+ and I can pretty much guarantee that’s all they are going to be getting out of me. Why did I sign up? I want to watch content on my iPad and Roku (coming soon) instead of sitting in front of my iMac. First off, the fact that they still serve you ads when you are paying $10 a month automatically puts the service on thin ice with me. I knew that...

“Game Center should allow non-game iOS apps to register for achievements and...”
– David Chartier nails a great idea. I’d love to make Game Center-shareable achievements in Instapaper, but I don’t think there’s any chance that Apple would approve it, even after today’s improvements. (via marco)

Boxee switches to Webkit →
hmmm, I wonder why Boxee would switch away from Mozilla’s Gecko browser engine? Surely it has nothing to do with all that h.264 iFriendly HTML5 video popping up all over the web that Mozilla refuses to support because of patentphobia. It’s a good day for Boxee fans.

Roku vs Apple TV →
There’s no doubt in my mind that the Apple TV will sell far better than the Roku, but it’s not necessarily going to be because it’s a better product. You should at least check out Roku’s offerings before you get out your credit card. I’ve been extremely satisfied with the three I have.

Screw Firefox
Hearing that Mozilla is still planning to boycott h.264 even though MPEG LA just announced that freely streaming videos using the codec will never incur fees annoys the hell out of me. They are doing nothing but throwing sand in the gears of everyone else trying to create the HTML5 video standard. If h.264 wasn’t already prevalent on the web or this was a war for the “final...
